Itinerary

Approx. 4 hours walking – 12.4 kms

The trip begins when we pick you up from your accommodation in the Nelson area and transport you to Mārahau. Check your bags, collect your lunch and have your trip briefing from our staff before you head off on the track!

On the trail you will spend the day hiking, swimming, and exploring forests and golden sand beaches en route to Anchorage. You’ll be met with a cup of tea or cold beer once you arrive at the Anchorage campground where your camp guide will show you around.

Enjoy a delicious meal prepared by your camp guide who will also show you the glowworm caves after dark. Sleep in comfort on our Kathmandu Cabana 75mm self-inflating air mattresses, complete with all your bedding including duvet and pillow. There are no hot showers at Anchorage campground, only a cold outdoor shower, but the location is simply stunning.

*Please note our Comfort Camping at Anchorage operates from mid-December until the end of February. Outside of this time B&B accommodation in Mārahau would be used.

Approx. 6 – 7 hours – 18.8kms

After breakfast you will begin your day by walking along the wonderful beach at Anchorage before heading on to Torrent Bay and the iconic Falls River Swing Bridge. Further on you will find Bark Bay, a great place to eat lunch and go for a swim. From this lovely spot you’ll head up the track’s largest ascent through stands of mānuka trees before walking back down to sea level to Tonga Quarry. A little further on you will discover Onetahuti Bay where an almost perfectly crescent shaped beach awaits you. You’ll be able to take off your shoes and enjoy walking barefoot along the beach before heading over to our Awaroa Glamping site.

Here the tents are permanently erected during the summer with hot showers available.  Proper mattresses with pillows and full bedding including towels are provided.  Your hosts, Mike & Birgit, are wonderful company and make the most delicious pizzas in their wood-fired outdoor pizza oven. Spend your evening enjoying your meal watching the sunset over Awaroa Bay.

Approx. 3 hours walking – 8.1kms

After a wholesome breakfast head out to explore the area and make your way to the Awaroa Inlet crossing. On the other side you’ll enjoy tramping through a breathtaking podocarp forest that leads to the golden sands of Waiharakeke and Goat Bays. Then make the final ascent over to the popular camping spot of Tōtaranui.

From Tōtaranui your water taxi will pick you up and return you to Mārahau, passing all the beautiful golden sand beaches that you explored during your trip. From Mārahau our transport will return you to your accommodation in Nelson.
