What to Pack for Your Abel Tasman Adventure with Abel Tasman Guides
Preparing for your Abel Tasman journey? Great choice! Whether you’re joining one of our guided multi-day trips or heading out for a day walk, packing the right gear will make your experience comfortable, safe, and enjoyable.
Here’s our recommended packing list for your day pack:
✅ 2 drink bottles per person
Each should hold 750ml to 1L — this will keep you hydrated throughout the day.
🚫 There is no filtered drinking water along the track, so be sure to fill up at your accommodation each morning.
✅ Camera or Cell Phone
To capture the stunning coastal views and golden beaches.
✅ Sunscreen & Insect Repellent
The New Zealand sun is strong, and sandflies can be sneaky at some spots along the track.
✅ Sandals or Water Shoes
Perfect for tidal crossings — easy to slip on and off and they dry quickly, just make sure they are tight fitting!
✅ Small Towel
Useful for drying your feet after tidal crossings or swimming.
✅ Swimming Togs & Towel (Optional)
There are plenty of beautiful beaches if you’re keen for a refreshing dip!
✅ Warm Layer & Rain Jacket
A light fleece and a rainproof/windproof jacket are must-haves. Even in summer, weather can change quickly.
✅Our track-notes are also handy to have tucked into a side pocket of your backpack – just in case.
What to Wear:
Sunhat & sunglasses
Essential for sun protection – buffs (neck-scarves) are great too.
Comfortable walking shoes or boots
Trail shoes or sturdy sneakers are perfect — no need for heavy boots unless you prefer them.
Walking shorts or trousers
Choose quick-dry, breathable materials.
Short or long-sleeve top
While short sleeves are common, many Kiwis now opt for long sleeves, even in summer, to protect against the strong UV rays.
Walking poles (Optional)
Bring your own or ask our staff to fit you up with one or a pair for the hike. Free rental for all our groups.
Extra Tips
• Pack light – you’ll enjoy the track more without a heavy load.
• Dry bags or zip-locks – handy for keeping electronics or snacks safe from sea spray or unexpected rain.
• Leave space for your lunch & snacks – provided on guided & self-guided (non-backpacker) trips, or bring your own.
• First aid – having a few plasters, tissues and blister repair kit is also very handy.
• Download – The Abel Tasman App for lots of useful information about the park. Great for history and wildlife + electronic maps of the park.
Your Abel Tasman experience should be as stress-free as possible, and having the right gear is a big part of that. If you have any questions or need gear suggestions, feel free to get in touch with our team.
